One mission could be packed with frantic dodges and chain attacks as you mow down monsters in dangerous 'Hollow' areas, whereas the next might be just grabbing coffee with a bud, or teaching a cute bunny-robot-thing Bangboo to play football. So instead of committing to one atmosphere, Zenless Zone Zero has doubled down on both. Spending time in its slick streets is a blast, no matter if it's throwing combat challenges or coffee dates your way.

If Zenless Zone Zero's fun and stylish gameplay wasn't so distracting, its smaller scale might initially come across as a bit of a downgrade when compared to developer miHoYo's open world in Genshin Impact, and the universe of possibilities found in Honkai: Star Rail. But it only takes one walk down the post-apocalyptic streets of New Eridu to see that a smaller area doesn't equal a lesser experience, as the city's subtleties have room to breathe, bringing the whole game to life. Its beautiful art style may be reminiscent of games like Persona 5, Jet Set Radio, and Hi-Fi Rush, but something relatively small that makes a notable difference are the NPCs. As far as I can tell, they all have custom designs on top of unique personalities, and they're sometimes more lovingly crafted than the characters in your own squad. (Sorry, Grace, but your goggles just don't compare to Enzo's mechanical arm and fancy sunhat.)

Even the simple act of exploring feels personal, as you can only do so with your main character - Belle or Wise, depending on who you pick at the beginning. The pair are siblings who run a video rental store called Random Play, but their main gig is moonlighting as illegal Proxies - techy individuals who take on commissions from New Eridu's denizens in need of guidance, as they traverse corrupted Hollow bubbles that could turn them into Ethereal monsters if they linger. It may sound a grim premise, but New Eridu actually has quite the cheery attitude in the face of danger. Who cares about being turned into a monster anyway when you can play Snake and Mr. Driller clones at the local arcade? Not these pop culture obsessed folks. It's a pleasant change from the typical world-ending stakes tacked on to many anime video games, and actually being able to play these arcade games only adds to the chilled vibes of taking in the city.

You know that giddy feeling you get when a game does something unmistakably right? I felt it using the delectable Grappleshot in Halo Infinite for the first time; when floating through a trippy music video-like sequence in Control; and when fighting the beautifully horrific Hyperion boss to ethereal organ tunes in Returnal. Perfectly preserved memories I reach for when I need a reminder on how good games can be. Imagine my surprise then when that giddy mood resurfaced during a hands-on preview for Zenless Zone Zero, Genshin Impact developer miHoYo's upcoming release. Something I already previewed during its second beta - and had a lot of issues with at the time.

It was the Twin Marionettes that did it. A boss picked at random in an area I stumbled into by chance while flicking through new maps. From what I can gather, you can challenge these 'Hunt' bosses three times a week to get either level-up materials or currency rewards, a standard way to keep you coming back and building shiny new characters. Resource farming doesn't exactly scream excitement, but that's precisely why the fight caught me so off guard. I had no idea what to do for the majority of it, but damn did it feel good swapping between my three characters at speed, watching flashy transition animations and blasting the duo with chaotic ultimate attacks.

My tiny Bangboo bunny-robot-thing even joined in on the fun to adorably slap the boss about, after I downed my dear Nicole by getting distracted by the spectacle of the Marionettes' assault. It felt like I was back in some bizarre, anime version of Returnal, sussing out how to dodge and weave in my offence, only this time the arena was coated in comic-book style dressings, reminiscent of the urban surroundings in games like Persona 5, Jet Set Radio, and Hi-Fi Rush. An ultracool design paired with super slick combat. Hello precious gaming memory, take a seat next to the Master Chief, you'll feel right at home.

Zenless Zone Zero producer Zhenyu Li revealed in a recent interview with Eurogamer (via an interpreter) that AI generated content is used in the game "program-wise" to "better smoothen the game progress."

No specific programming examples were provided, as Li is "not a tech person," but he did stress that AI "only consists of a small part of the programming [in Zenless Zone Zero], mostly to help the programming team to smoothen the production process, to actually make our work more efficient."

Something we do know is that the game's signature vibrant, urban art style that sets it apart from miHoYo's other titles, Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, is not something made with AI generation. Li says the team wants to "create something from our own mind" when it comes to art related content, and in a later statement provided to Eurogamer to clarify some comments, it was added that this is "something the whole team believes in."

The upcoming free-to-play RPG from the Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail team is set to release across Android, iOS, PC and PS5 on 4th July. This date was previously suspected, when Apple's App Store on mobile said the game was "expected" on 4th July here in the UK.

Zenless Zone Zero, the next game from Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail developer miHoYo, will also be releasing on PS5.

Initially revealed as an action RPG for PC and mobile, the PS5 port was announced during last night's PlayStation State of Play.

There's something missing from Zenless Zone Zero. Armed with a deep combat system, new urban setting, and roster of characters easy to love, it seemed like developer miHoYo was teed up for another win after recent successes Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Having spent countless hours immersed in both of these worlds, I'm still fascinated enough to show up for each patch, so miHoYo's newest post-apocalyptic take on their winning formula should surely be my next obsession... and yet after playing its second beta, I'm left more confused than anything else.

The most egregious reason Zenless Zone Zero feels so off is its major pacing issues, primarily caused by its insistence on throwing you into the same television-styled mini-game. While there are variations in what you do during each TV grid - like remembering colour sequences, or solving box puzzles - the majority of your playtime in Zenless Zone Zero is made up of slowly moving up, down, left and right. Main missions, side quests, and even the bonus roguelike mode all force you into this linear perspective, with little to no variation in how the grid is presented. It's a bizarre division of your time because the grid mini-game is one of the worst parts of Zenless Zone Zero, whereas combat is absolutely one of its finest. It's absurd that this fast-paced, incredibly stylish action is constantly pushed aside in favour of traversing boring grids, as you only get brief moments of combat before you're forced back to the TV exploration mode.

Fighting has a focus on dashing and quick-swapping between characters, meaning you're always on the move, thinking about your next action. It's easy to play, offers depth for more dedicated players, and, most importantly, feels ridiculously cool. So why is it drip fed instead of the main course? The occasional longer stints spent blasting through waves of enemies serve as a wistful example of what Zenless Zone Zero could have been.

Genshin Impact developer miHoYo's new game, Zenless Zone Zero, is inviting players to express their interest in an all-new beta test.

Players aged 16+ on PC and Android/iOS devices can apply now to be in with a chance of securing a spot in the beta, although miHoYo stresses that the test is only open to "limited accounts" and all data will be deleted at the end.

Right now, it's unclear when the beta test will run or even how long you have to get your name down on the list, but all interested parties are invited to complete the pre-registration and "Equalising Test" sign-up survey to "successfully sign up for a chance to win Equalising Test Qualification".

The developer of phenomenally successful role-playing game Genshin Impact has properly revealed its new game after an initial tease.

Zenless Zone Zero is an action role-playing game from HoYoverse (which manages all of miHoYo's global operations outside of China). HoYoverse describe it as an urban fantasy title and an "attempt to further explore action-oriented gameplay".

The fast-paced trailer, below, introduces a number of anime characters who take on enemies in stylish combat.

Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse (which manages all of miHoYo's global operations outside of China) has teased its upcoming game, Zenless Zone Zero.

The game's site is now live and shows a digital clock perched atop a retro TV. Meanwhile, off to one side, there is a calendar couting down to 13th May. More interestingly (and also more strangely), the dials on the TV can actually be twiddled by clicking on them and, when done so, one of two videos will start playing.

The first video is mostly static with a few blurry and erratic shots thrown in here and there. Throughout, an unknown man chats a lot about "Doomsday" and states, "in short, we're being reborn... and you're involved." If that doesn't make a lot of sense to you right now, don't worry. It doesn't to us either.
